Greenpeace Launches Satellite Tracking System to Monitor Nord Stream 2 Construction

The Russian office of Greenpeace is launching a satellite tracking system to monitor the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in Russia, the organization said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) The Russian office of Greenpeace is launching a satellite tracking system to monitor the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in Russia, the organization said on Thursday.

"The Russian office of Greenpeace is launching a satellite tracking system, which will allow any user to monitor whether Nord Stream 2 AG [the company overseeing the pipeline's construction] is violating the borders determined for the construction," Greenpeace said.

Earlier in the day, a company spokesman told Sputnik that Nord Stream 2 AG has begun preparatory work for the pipeline's construction on the territory of Russia's Kurgalsky reserve in the Leningrad region.

"According to the project, for the first 1.3 kilometers [0.8 mile] from the coast, the gas pipeline route should have a width of 30 meters [98 feet]; over the next 400 meters, the width of the route should not exceed 40 meters; at the remaining two kilometers [the width should not exceed] 60 meters. These parameters were approved by an environmental assessment. Despite the fact that it will not save valuable natural sites of the reserve, Greenpeace will require strict compliance with these decisions," the organization said.

Greenpeace has warned that it will send relevant notices to law enforcement if there are any violations by Nord Stream 2 AG.

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction of two gas pipelines that will run from Russia through the Baltic Sea and and to a hub in Germany, bypassing Ukraine entirely. The project is a joint venture of Russian energy giant Gazprom, French Engie, Austrian OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and German Uniper and Wintershall.
