Merseyside police recorded 12,323 such cases in the 12 months to June, twice more than in the previous year, The Times newspaper's analysis of police statistics showed.
A total of 15 forces out of 35 whose logs were available reportedly showed a rise in the use of this practice, compared to the previous year, while some began using it less.
In May, UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid expressed his support for stop and search amid the rise of street violence.
