US, Allies to Respond to Any New Chemical Attacks by Syria's Assad - Representative to UN

The United States stands ready to respond to any chemical attacks in Syria perpetrated by the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, US Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council Kelley Currie said during a UN Security Council briefing on Syria on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th August, 2018) The United States stands ready to respond to any chemical attacks in Syria perpetrated by the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, US Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council Kelley Currie said during a UN Security Council briefing on Syria on Tuesday.

"The United States and our allies France and the United Kingdom will respond appropriately to any new chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime," Currie said.

Currie also voiced "deep concern" that the Syrian government may use chemical weapons against the civilian population in the future.

On Saturday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said militants in Syria were preparing a provocation to accuse the Syrian government of using chemical weapons against civilians in the province of Idlib.

Konshenkov said the following day that the provocation was planned within the next two days in the settlement of Kafr Zita with the assistance of English-speaking specialists.

The United States redeployed several days its warship USS Sullivan, armed with 56 cruise missiles, and a B-1B strategic bomber armed with 24 cruise missiles closer to the region.

Last Wednesday, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said that the United States understood the Syrian government plans to resume offensive activities in Idlib and would respond very strongly if it used chemical weapons.
