Syria Wants South Ossetia To Improve Status At International Level - President Assad

TSKHINVALI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th August, 2018) Syrian President Bashar Assad has expressed hope that the partially-recognized state of South Ossetia will improve its status among other countries.

The letter by Assad was read out in South Ossetia's capital Tskhinvali by the Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad, who is visiting the region on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Russia's recognition of the republic's independence.

"We have a strong desire to see South Ossetia improve its position at the international level in order to contribute to the dissemination of justice and law around the world," Assad's letter read.

Assad also said that the republic had become a role model for those who seek freedom, independence and sovereignty.

"Today, we stand on the threshold of the creation of a better future thanks to the agreement on friendship and cooperation between the two countries and other agreements signed during the republic's president's visit to Syria ... There is no doubt that the visit was crucial to the development of the relations between Syria and South Ossetia," the Syrian president added.

Damascus established diplomatic relations with the breakaway region in July after recognizing South Ossetia's independence in May. Later in July, South Ossetian President Anatoly Bibilov paid a visit to Syria, where he met with Assad. According to Haddad, Syrian Embassy in the republic is set to be opened in the near future.
