India In Talks With EU To Maintain Oil Flow From Iran Despite US Sanctions - Reports

NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) India is holding negotiations with the European Union in order to evade the US sanctions on Tehran, which jeopardize the supply of oil from Iran to India, local media reported, citing its sources.

New Delhi is also trying to communicate to Washington the threat its sanctions pose to India's economy, according to the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Iran ranks third among oil suppliers to India, the media outlet added.

In May, US President Donald Trump said that the United States would exit the Iran nuclear deal, which stipulated that Tehran would ensure the peaceful nature of its program in exchange for the gradual easing of international sanctions. Other parties to the agreement have denounced the US move and committed themselves to preserving the deal.

Iran is currently facing the reintroduction of US sanctions. Part of the restrictions went into force earlier this month, while the second portion is expected to take effect in the fall.
