Majority Of Americans Want More Women To Run For Congress - Poll

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) Most American voters welcome the fact that more women are running for Congress in this year's mid-term elections than ever before, a new poll by Pew Research Center showed on Wednesday.

"About six-in-ten Americans (61%) say its a good thing that more women are running for US Congress this year than in the past, while a third say this is neither good nor bad," the survey revealed.

The poll noted that only 5 percent of American voters disapprove of the trend.

When it comes to partisan opinion, a large majority of Democrats, both male and female, like the fact that more women are competing for seats in Congress. Republican women are more divided, with slight majority of 47 percent saying that the trend is nether good nor bad and 45 percent of respondents saying the development is positive for the United States.

However, when asked whether having more women in Congress would improve the work of the chamber, only 39 percent agreed with the assertion.

The Center for American Women and politics (CAWP) said in a research report in April that there are still 11 states in the country which have no women representing them in Congress. Moreover, black women have served as congresswomen in just 16 states and Asian-American female represented their districts in just six states, the research found.
