The death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is a huge loss for the world, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer said Saturday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th August, 2018) The death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is a huge loss for the world, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer said Saturday.

Annan passed away at the age of 80 in his family circle after a short illness.

"Saddened to hear of the passing of Kofi Annan. A true humanitarian leader and an ardent champion for peace. A huge loss for our world - he will be missed," Maurer said on Twitter.

Annan was born in 1938 and served as the head of the United Nations in 1997-2006, winning the 2001 Nobel Peace prize. In 2007, he founded the Kofi Annan Foundation, a non-profit focused on support for democracy, fighting hunger and drug trafficking, and nurturing youth leadership.
