Russian Lower House Speaker Heads to Turkey for 2-Day Working Visit - Statement

Russian State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin on Friday started his two-day working visit to Ankara to meet with Turkish legislators, Duma's press service said.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) Russian State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin on Friday started his two-day working visit to Ankara to meet with Turkish legislators, Duma's press service said.

"Vyacheslav Volodin, as the head of the State Duma delegation, has left today for Ankara. Tomorrow he will take part in the sixth congress of the Justice and Development Party founded by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan," the press service said.

Volodin was also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings with the Turkish authorities, the lower house added.

Turkey is currently experiencing serious economic pressure on the part of the United States over detention of US pastor Andrew Brunson in Turkey about two years ago on suspicion of ties to the Gulen movement accused by Ankara of orchestrating the 2016 failed military coup. Last week, US President Donald Trump said he had authorized doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs on Turkey, up to 50 and 20 percent, respectively. The Turkish lira briefly fell 20 percent against the US Dollar reaching a record low amid the news.
