England, Wales Police Chiefs Vow to Address High Levels of Sexual Harassment Among Staff

Police chiefs in England and Wales pledged to take measures in response to high levels of sexual harassment faced by police staff, the UK public service union UNISON said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) Police chiefs in England and Wales pledged to take measures in response to high levels of sexual harassment faced by police staff, the UK public service union UNISON said on Thursday.

The union published findings of a survey among police staff in England, Wales and Scotland. The survey has revealed that a significant number of police workers faced such behavior as sexually explicit jokes and gestures, inappropriate personal questions and unwelcome touching at workplace.

"The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) says the report highlights some outdated and unacceptable behavior that must be rooted out. Details include some police staff (4 percent) being pressurized into having sex with colleagues, or being told that sexual favors could result in preferential treatment (8 percent)," the union said.

According to NPCC Lead for Professional Ethics Julian Williams, the council would develop a comprehensive action plan by October to addresses the range of harassment found.

"Some of the behavior described is predatory and requires the strongest response from police with individuals removed from the service," Williams said, as cited by UNISON.

The UNISON survey was conducted online in 2016 among 1,776 police staff members who were not police officers.
