Rebuilding Syria Not Priority for Germany Since Bloodshed Continues - Government Spokesman

The Syrian reconstruction efforts are not currently a priority for the German government since the years-long conflict in the Arab country is still ongoing and safe living conditions have yet to be established, the cabinet spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said on Wednesday.

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) The Syrian reconstruction efforts are not currently a priority for the German government since the years-long conflict in the Arab country is still ongoing and safe living conditions have yet to be established, the cabinet spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said on Wednesday.

"We should achieve the situation where the bloodshed in Syria has stopped, and we are currently far from this in some parts of the country. We should achieve a situation where displaced persons and those who fled abroad are able to think about returning home to safe conditions. We are very far from this. That is why this issue [of Syrian reconstruction] is not a priority for us," Seibert told reporters, when asked about Berlins participation in financing the restoration of Syria.

Germany has been actively helping in the process of finding a political settlement to the Syrian conflict as well as the creation of good living conditions for the Syrians, Seibert pointed out.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has said that it would take up to $400 billion to rebuild Syria after the conflict, which has been raging since 2011. Moscow, which has been actively supporting the Syrian authorities' humanitarian and reconstruction efforts, has called on the European Union to contribute to these efforts.

In June, the Syrian president said he would not accept the Wests help after claims by some politicians surfaced saying that Western nations would not fund these efforts while Assad was in power.
