"However, even animals need looking after, but this is something the UAE is not blind to either. Every creature, with wings or legs, is vital. The Abu Dhabi Police, in collaboration with the Environment Friends Society, Abu Dhabi, distributed 2,000 water containers at different public facilities in the emirate to provide drinking water for thirsty birds during summer as part of the Year of Zayed activities," the paper said in its Wednesday editorial.
"As Major General Sultan Al Nuaimi, Director of the Financial Services Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, said the water bowl initiative aims to promote the values and vision of Sheikh Zayed on eco-conservation. The humanitarian foresight of the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in this regard should be extolled.
"In April, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, in coordination with local government authorities in Sharjah, seized nearly 400 ornamental birds that are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. In fact, animal care does not lag behind human care here. There are several organisations in the Emirates that cater for animal welfare, such as K9 Friends Dubai, Abu Dhabi Animal Shelter, and Stray Dogs Centre in Umm Al Qaiwain," the Sharjah-based daily continued.
It said that camels are lodged on a pedestal in Emirati culture, and that Dubai has a hospital purely for camels shows the extent of the concern for the beloved creatures. "Dogs are treated with a lot of care too. Stray dogs are hardly seen. The Sharjah Cat and Dog Shelter project is a cage-less building comprising eight suites which harbour six cats or kittens in each room. The dogs are housed in cabins, which have been refurbished into kennels and a quarantine block."
The paper went on to highlight Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi's, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, inauguration of the First National Conference on Animal Welfare, organised by the Ministry in November 2016, at the World Trade Centre in Dubai.
According to The Gulf Today, the conference was the first national conference ever within the country and the region concerning animal welfare in Dubai, in which Dr. Al-Zeyoudi said, "The conference is the first of its kind in the region and it underlines UAE’s special attention on the constant follow-up of the animal welfare procedures and its development in accordance with the best international standards and practices to build an integrated platform for the animal welfare."
"Animals too need care and protection. They too have feelings and we should be aware of that. In this respect, the UAE’s steps to ensure their wellbeing are praiseworthy," the English language daily concluded.
