ABU DHABI, (Pakistan Point News - 30th Jun, 2018) Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council, FNC, has stated that parliamentary institutions play a vital role in achieving the sustainable development plan and promoting the march of nations and people towards development and global competitiveness, while pointing out that the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, recognised their role in increasing participation and institutionalising the Shura approach, which is deep-rooted in the Emirati culture and national identity.

In her remarks on the occasion of International Day of Parliamentarism, Dr. Al Qubaisi said that this day is an important occasion to be invested to confirm the role played by national parliaments in supporting development and modernisation, building plans, and exercising their legislative and supervisory roles at the parliamentary diplomacy level.

"The UAE's consultative approach is deeply rooted in the history of our society through instilled mechanisms of community dialogue, exchange of opinion, consultation and constructive interaction between the ruler and the people. The principles of Shura, participation in decision-making and open-door policy are an integral part of the UAE history and traditions," she said.

This approach was institutionalised after the establishment of the Union on 2nd December, 1971, by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who laid the foundation stone of the constitutional institutions of the system of government at the top of his priorities and interests when establishing the country.

The FNC Speaker expressed the council's pride at the gradual approach adopted by the wise leadership to enhance parliamentary life and political participation, based on the political programme of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which aims at empowering various segments of the society, particularly women.

Dr. Al Qubaisi emphasised the FNC's continued service to the homeland and for citizens’ causes, and to keep abreast of the development being witnessed by the country in all fields in light of the continuous support of the wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and The Supreme Council Members, Their Highnesses Rulers of the Emirates.

For the first time, 30 June this year is celebrated as the International Day of Parliamentarism. It is also the date, in 1889, on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union the global organisation of parliaments was established.

This Day celebrates parliaments and the ways in which parliamentary systems of government improve the day-to-day lives of people the world over. It is also an opportunity for parliaments to take stock, identify challenges, and ways to address them effectively.
