UAE participates in meeting of APA ‘Committee on Economic and Sustainable Development’ in Cyprus

The Parliamentary Division of the Federal National Council, FNC, highlighted the necessity for parliaments to adopt strategies that support government efforts to achieve sustainable development and promote clean renewable energy, such as solar, water and wind energy.

CYPRUS, (Pakistan Point News - 27th Jun, 2018) The Parliamentary Division of the Federal National Council, FNC, highlighted the necessity for parliaments to adopt strategies that support government efforts to achieve sustainable development and promote clean renewable energy, such as solar, water and wind energy.

It also called for the creation of effective partnership programmes between the private sector and governments, to achieve sustainability through cooperation.

The division, represented by FNC member Azza Sulaiman bin Sulaiman, made this statement during its participation in the meeting of the "Committee on Economic and Sustainable Development" of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, APA, which started yesterday in Cyprus.

In her speech, bin Sulaiman called on the international community to enforce its political will and raise its commitment to achieve sustainable development, through realising international developmental goals, such as including the "Millennium Goals," while highlighting the necessity of adopting strategies to improve living standards, through implementing policies and laws, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and supporting the development of local technology, research and innovation.

She added that the UAE Government is continuing to promote sustainable development, protect the environment, and create balance between economic and social development while noting that the national agenda of the UAE Vision 2021 aims to develop a sustainable environment in terms of air quality, preserving water resources, increasing reliance on clean energy, and achieving green development.

She explained that the UAE is constantly adopting initiatives to help achieve sustainable development, such as the launch of the "UAE Green Growth Strategy 2012," under the slogan, "A Green Economy for Sustainable Development for the UAE." She also pointed out that Masdar City is the world’s first carbon-neutral and waste-free city, and is the first city that completely runs on solar energy, and is among the most sustainable cities in the world.

Sulaiman warned that the rise in the level of unemployment and inequality and the worsening economic conditions around the world are the key challenges that prevent the elimination of poverty, which results in the spread of crime and the undermining of security and stability.

During the meeting of the committee, an election took place to select its officers while the APA General Secretariat’s report on the topics relevant to the committee was presented.
