Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf resigns amid elections turmoil

Says I don’t want my presence to raise questions on transparency of elections

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 20th June, 2018) Attorney General of Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf has tendered his resignation.

According to media reports, Ausaf forwarded his resignation to the president. He was appointed attorney general of Pakistan on March 29, 2016.

Speaking about the decision, Ausaf said that he is submitting his resignation in view of upcoming general elections and country’s current political situation. He said that he took this step before any political party could raise reservations upon him affecting the general elections.

He said that strengthening and transferring democracy is an important element of the Constitution. I don’t want my presence to raise questions on transparency of the elections, Ausaf said.

He said that he has resigned to remove any hurdles in holding general elections and to ensure transparency in the elections.

The resignation by the attorney general comes following the removal of Asma Hamid from the post of advocate general of Punjab by the government.
