Islamabad, (Pakistan Point News - 8th May, 2018) : It has been revealed that 57 percent more than the capacity of prisoners in prisons of the country's provinces and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are kept. Total number of prisoners in jails is 83718 and only in Gilgit Baltistan jails the number of inmates is less than its capacity. The Gilgit Baltistan jails have 374 prisoners while has the capacity of 740 inmates. The number of women prisoners is 1527 while total 1194 children are in jails.

However, there is no jail in Islamabad and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The health of prisoners is affected due to more inmates than its capacity as it causes spread of diseases. The National Coordinator of NACTA, Ahsan Ghani on Tuesday addressing a function here at a local hotel regarding a report on the number of prisoners in Pakistan jail by the National Counter Terrorism Authority and International Committee of the Red Cross said in Pakistan it is a tradition that people are dumped in jails.

He said that people after spending years in jails are declared innocent which is cruelty and the worst kind of human rights violation. The representatives of ICRC, experts of Counter Terrorism, members of civil society, lawyers and foreign delegates participated in the function. According to the report there are 40 jails in Punjab including two for juvenile and one for women. Similarly, the reports said Sindh province has 26 prisons including three for women and five for children.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has 22 jails but no prison for women and children in the province. Likewise, the reports said no juvenile and women jail in 11 prisons of Balochistan. It said 50,405 inmates are languishing in Punjab jails although they have the capacity of only 30074 prisoners. The report said 18998 are in Sindh jails with capacity of 12245. Similarly, the report said 11330 inmates are in KP jails but they have the capacity of only 7587 prisoners. Likewise, in Balochistan, there are 2427 inmates with capacity of only 2585. The report said that 1117 foreigners are imprisoned in jails of Pakistan in which 225 in Punjab, 811 in sindh, 2 in KP and 49 in Balochistan.
