Armed Uber driver attempts to rob LUMS student

Student says this was not just a matter of theft but a kidnapping attempt

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 23rd Apr, 2018) A student of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has shared her Uber experience on Facebook and it is actually scary.

Momina Ashraf was travelling from LUMS to Thokar Niaz Baig by Uber on Thursday, 19th April, around 4:30 pm when the driver called back from another number and proceeded to ask her several times if she was a student at LUMS.

“As soon as he was out of the streets in DHA, and onto the main road, he asked me for my phone since he claimed that his battery was too low and he had to call someone. When I asked for my phone, he asked me to keep quiet and hand over my debit card, and not to make a fuss since there was another car following us - or so he claimed,” the girl said while narrating the incident.

“I gave him all that he asked for but demanded that he return my phone, but to no avail. By then, I was well aware of what was happening to me, when he showed me his gun, I rolled down the windows and started calling out for help. He grabbed me and so I jumped out of the moving car. I suffered several injuries, on my back, foot, arm, elbows etc. Several people gathered to help me up and the police took me into custody. I called up my dad, who pulled strings in several places which led to an extremely efficient and thorough investigation of the entire incident,” she further said.

She said that the lesson is that these rides are no longer safe as this was not just a matter of theft but a kidnapping attempt.

The ride-hailing company Uber is yet to comment on the incident.

Uber and Careem are being widely used for travelling around this city, However, such incidents are raising questions over the safety of passengers taking these rides. Earlier, model Nazish Jahangir Khan also shared her Careem experience where the driver attempted to kidnap her.
