Court, in its initial ruling, observes that Paetongtarn will remain suspended until a final verdict is reached on matter
BANGKOK: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 1st, 2025) Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office following the leak of a controversial phone call with a former Cambodian prime minister, amid allegations of dishonesty and constitutional violations.
The suspension came after 36 Thai senators filed a petition accusing the Prime Minister of breaching constitutional provisions. The court, in its initial ruling, stated that Paetongtarn would remain suspended until a final verdict is reached on the matter.
The controversy arose last month after a border clash between Thai and Cambodian forces.
Following the incident, a phone call between Paetongtarn and the former Cambodian premier was leaked, in which the Thai Prime Minister was reportedly heard criticizing a senior Thai military officer.
The leak caused a major political stir, with growing public backlash and demands for her resignation.
According to local media, the court took the petition seriously and cited the potential misconduct and constitutional breaches. The prime minister now awaited a full hearing that would determine her political future.
PM Paetongtarn has yet to publicly respond to the court’s decision.
The political observers said that the incident has significantly shaken her administration just months into her tenure as Thailand’s first female prime minister.
