Pakistan carries first liver transplant to treat spread of colon cancer

Doctors removed patient’s entire liver — which had been severely damaged by cancer — and replaced it with a portion of her husband’s liver, making it first instance in Pakistan where a full liver was removed and replaced in a cancer patient

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 21st, 2025) Pakistan on Saturday successfully carried out its first liver transplant to treat the spread of colon cancer to the liver.

The milestone procedure was performed at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, marking the country’s first successful liver transplant involving a liver affected by metastatic colon cancer.

The patient, a woman from Karachi, was initially diagnosed with cancer in the terminal part of her colon. As the disease progressed, it spread to her liver which necessitated a transplant.

In a groundbreaking procedure, doctors removed the patient’s entire liver — which had been severely damaged by cancer — and replaced it with a portion of her husband’s liver, making it the first instance in Pakistan where a full liver was removed and replaced in a cancer patient.

The doctors revealed that the woman's liver was completely destroyed by the cancer. In a life-saving gesture, her husband donated the left lobe of his liver to save her life.

According to the medical sources, the woman is now cancer-free and has resumed a normal life following the successful transplant.
