Indian media report PM Modi has not yet received a formal invitation from Canadian government
NEW DEHLI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 2nd, 2025) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit, marking the first time in six years that he may skip the high-profile gathering of world leaders.
The summit, hosted by Canada, is scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17. However, according to Indian media reports, Prime Minister Modi has not yet received a formal invitation from the Canadian government. Even if one is extended, sources indicate that he may choose not to participate.
The possible absence comes amid strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada, particularly over the issue of the Khalistan movement.
New Delhi remains skeptical about whether the newly elected Canadian government will seriously address India’s longstanding concerns regarding pro-Khalistan activities within Canadian territory.
A spokesperson for the Canadian G7 presidency declined to confirm whether an invitation would be extended to the Indian leader.
India has been a regular invitee to G7 summits in recent years as part of efforts by the group to engage key non-member democracies. Modi’s potential non-attendance could reflect the ongoing diplomatic chill between the two nations, which has deepened in recent months over mutual accusations and tensions related to separatist movements.
The final list of guest nations at the summit is yet to be officially announced.
