Middle East Green Initiative Executive Committee Holds 20th Meeting, Reviews 35.4 Billion Tree-Planting, 99.4 Million-Hectare Rehabilitation Targets

Riyadh, July (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 22 يوليو 2026ء) During the meeting, Secretary-General of the middle East Green Initiative Eng. Ibrahim Alturki presented a report on the General Secretariat's key achievements during the first half of 2026. These included implementing capacity-building and knowledge-transfer programs, strengthening strategic partnerships with regional and international organizations and development financing institutions, and completing the General Secretariat's operational preparations.

The report also highlighted the development of a communication strategy with member states and partners. The strategy included launching the initiative's website and social media accounts, in addition to the General Secretariat's work plan for the second half of the year.

Committee members also discussed nominations for membership in the initiative's Scientific Advisory Committee, which comprises a group of international experts responsible for providing scientific and technical advice and studying issues related to developing vegetation cover in the region. The committee supports efforts to achieve the initiative's regional targets.

The meeting also reviewed five internal policies governing the work of the General Secretariat, including the Communication and Transparency Policy, the Stakeholder Engagement Policy, and the Administrative Affairs Policy, in addition to several organizational policies aimed at enhancing institutional efficiency.

The General Secretariat also presented its strategy development program for the next five years and its accompanying roadmap in preparation for submission to the initiative's next ministerial council meeting. The meeting also reviewed the latest data received from member states on their national targets for developing vegetation cover, which contribute to achieving the initiative's regional target. The overall targets include planting 35.4 billion trees and rehabilitating 99.4 million hectares of degraded land.

The Executive Committee is responsible for making operational decisions for the Middle East Green Initiative and is represented by delegations of deputy ministers and undersecretaries from the relevant ministries of the initiative's member states.
