King Salman Royal Reserve Documents Rare Arabian Toad Behavior

Sakaka, July (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 16 يوليو 2026ء) The discovery was made during an environmental field survey within the reserve, where newly developed tadpoles were observed attacking a larger, more advanced individual undergoing metamorphosis. According to a study published in the international journal Herpetology Notes, this is the first documented observation of this behavior in a natural environment, both in Saudi Arabia and worldwide.

Cannibalism among amphibians typically involves larger individuals preying on smaller ones. However, the observed behavior represents a complete reversal of this pattern, with the smaller individuals acting as predators. The finding opens new avenues for understanding feeding behavior dynamics within the same species.

The Arabian toad is endemic to the Arabian Peninsula and is known for its ability to adapt to mountainous and semi-arid environments where water sources are available. Although the species has been used in laboratory studies, documentation of its behavior in its natural habitat remains limited, giving this discovery additional scientific significance.

The achievement forms part of the reserve's ongoing efforts to monitor wildlife and study environmental changes across its vast area of more than 130,000 square kilometers. Research teams place particular emphasis on amphibians because of their vital role in maintaining ecological balance.

The study reflects the reserve's growing role as a leading center for biodiversity research and its contribution to advancing scientific knowledge while enhancing Saudi Arabia's position in environmental research at the international level.
