NWC Records Major Environmental Milestones Across Afforestation, Recycling, and Water Reuse

Riyadh, July (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 02 يوليو 2026ء) The company translates these goals into tangible impact on the ground – having planted more than 6.7 million native trees and treated over 966.95 million cubic meters of wastewater, enhancing water use efficiency and supporting vegetation cover restoration.

Sustainability does not stop at afforestation. NWC has strengthened its environmental compliance system by aligning its operations with national laws and regulations; 30 operational sites, including 29 sewage treatment plants (STPs), have obtained certification under the International Environmental Management System (EMS) standard ISO 14001.

The company has also strengthened its environmental monitoring system by training 60 internal auditors and 12 lead auditors, and conducting six specialized workshops to enhance the efficiency of operational staff, while issuing 137 environmental permits for the company’s projects and operational facilities.

In the area of the circular economy, NWC recorded an 8% increase in the volume of treated wastewater, while the reuse rate of treated water reached 21.8% in strategic sectors, including irrigation, industry, mining, energy, and oil and gas extraction. To ensure that the quality of this water conforms to approved standards, the company’s laboratories conducted 237,151 microbiological and chemical tests.

The company’s environmental impact also extends to waste management and recycling. It handled 34,000 tons of nonhazardous waste and 29,000 tons of hazardous solid waste. Environmental initiatives included licensing the first integrated engineered landfill in Jeddah and launching projects to produce bioenergy from sludge via anaerobic digesters at the Ajial and Heet plants, thereby helping reduce carbon emissions and enhance the utilization of operational waste.

With regard to afforestation and ecosystem restoration, the number of native trees planted by the company has exceeded 6.7 million toward its target of 10 million trees by 2030, across more than 150 sites throughout the Kingdom. The afforestation efforts have included planting more than 25 native plant species suited to various natural environments.

The company is preparing to expand its contribution to national environmental initiatives by planting 15 million mangrove trees along the Kingdom’s eastern and western coasts by 2030, and by implementing programs to measure carbon sequestration rates using advanced sensing technologies.

Buraidah Environmental Oasis has achieved notable international milestones by entering the Guinness World Records as the largest man-made oasis, and by attaining the first globally certified water footprint and the first certified carbon footprint in the middle East and Europe. It has also played a key role in supporting biodiversity through the release of 15 addax antelopes as part of wildlife reintroduction programs.

These indicators underscore the National Water Company’s growing role in balancing operational growth with environmental conservation by adopting sustainable solutions that protect natural resources, enhance the quality of life, and support the Kingdom’s economic development.
