Tunis, September (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز 08 سبتمبر 2025ء) Despite a history of commercial exploitation, coral extraction is now strictly controlled through a limited number of annual licenses. Current annual production stands at only 3 to 4 tons, a significant reduction from the more than 20 tons produced in the 1960s before environmental controls were implemented. The export of coral generates an estimated $3.5 to 4 million annually.
In cooperation with international organizations, Tunisian authorities are working to promote scientific research on coral and develop effective protection programs. These efforts include seeking to have the coastal town of Tabarka included in a world network of marine protected areas to safeguard its unique ecosystem.
