Riyadh, July (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز 09 يوليو 2025ء) Sixty years after its launch, Saudi Television remains a cornerstone of national media, preserving its identity while adapting to the changes in contemporary media.
The initial broadcasts began in the cities of Riyadh and Jeddah, presented in black and white, with a focus on religious and cultural programming. These early broadcasts prominently featured recitations of the Holy Quran, highlighting the core values of Saudi media.
In 1974, broadcasting underwent significant technological advancements with the introduction of color television, marking a substantial shift in the viewing experience within the Kingdom. Over time, the geographic coverage of broadcasts expanded, reaching audiences across the Arab world and beyond through the airing of various programs and live coverage of important events.
At the start of the 1990s, the television landscape underwent a significant transformation due to advancements in technology and production methods. A more professional approach to directing, presenting, and news production began to emerge, accompanied by the introduction of innovative content that reflected the Kingdom's growth and media aspirations.
As the new millennium began, Saudi Television entered a phase of specialization and digital expansion. This period was marked by the Saudi Broadcasting Authority's launch of various specialized channels, which enriched the diversity of content and catered to the audience's demands.
The most notable channels include Al-Ekhbariya Channel, which was established in 2004 to provide both local and international news; the Holy Quran Channel, which began broadcasting in 2009 and offers live coverage from the Grand Mosque 24/7; and the Sunnah Channel, which transmits from the Prophet's Mosque and features prayers and religious programs throughout the day.
Saudi Television has upheld its status as the official media outlet, showcasing national events, official speeches, and cultural, religious, and social programs that reflect the identity of the Kingdom.
As part of Saudi Vision 2030, the media sector has been prioritized in the national transformation process, focusing on its development to adapt to changing dynamics and connect with society.
SBC Channel was launched in 2018 as a contemporary entertainment channel aimed at Saudi youth and families, providing fresh and diverse content. In 2020, Thikrayat Channel was introduced to revive old artistic and cultural works, presenting them to a new generation that did not have the opportunity to view them during their original broadcasts.
Development has moved into the digital realm, as Saudi Television enhances its utilization of digital platforms such as live online broadcasting and smartphone applications, including Al-Oula and Saudi On Demand (SOD) in English, to ensure that content is accessible anytime and anywhere. Saudi talent was given opportunities to participate in presentation, preparation, and production, bolstering the state's efforts to localize the media industry and strengthen its presence.
Since its inception in 1965, Saudi Television has consistently reflected societal changes and advancements, serving as a powerful tool for communicating the Kingdom's message both within the country and beyond its borders. Over the decades, it has successfully adapted to technological and social changes, evolving into a comprehensive media system that combines authenticity with innovation. Amid the ongoing modernization driven by Saudi Vision 2030, Saudi Television plays a crucial role in fostering awareness, reinforcing national identity, and achieving sustainable media development.
