‘Tukmeem’: Madinah Farmers Preserve Ripening Dates with Time-Honored Technique

Madinah, July (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 09 يوليو 2025ء) As the ripening season progresses, palm farmers across Madinah Region continue to employ traditional protective methods to preserve their crops—most notably, the practice known as “Tukmeem,” or locally as “Tatfeesh.” This age-old technique has been passed down through generations.

The process involves covering palm bunches (locally known as Qanniyah) with mesh or fabric bags to shield them from birds, insects, and weather fluctuations. In addition to offering protection, the method helps accelerate the ripening process and reduce fruit drop.

The Tukmeem period typically ranges from 45 to 60 days, depending on the type of date and the targeted stage of ripeness. This ensures that the fruit reaches consumers with the distinctive taste and premium quality for which Madinah’s palms are renowned.
