Sudanese Protesters Vow to Continue Rallies Outside Army Headquarters in Khartoum

KHARTOUM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th April, 2019) Sudanese protesters have stated they will continue their rallies outside the army headquarters in the country's capital of Khartoum after Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf announced the detention of the country long-serving ruler Omar Bashir.

Earlier on Thursday, Auf declared that Bashir, who had been in power for nearly 30 years, was detained and that a three-month-long state of emergency was imposed in the country. He also announced the formation of a military council in the country, which will manage the state during the transitional period of two years.

The Northeast African nation has been swept by rallies, which often turned violent and resulted in deaths and inures, since December.

The demonstrations were initially triggered by the rise in price for bread and other consumer goods that greatly increased the vulnerability of Sudanese citizens. The protests then took on a new dimension as Sudanese citizens started calling for the resignation of Bashir.
