Police detained on Saturday 35 participants of "yellow vests" mass protests against the rise in fuel prices in the French capital of Paris, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th November, 2018) Police detained on Saturday 35 participants of "yellow vests" mass protests against the rise in fuel prices in the French capital of Paris, local media reported.

Earlier in the day, violence erupted on the Champs Elysees as police clashed with protesters, who reportedly wanted to reach the Elysee Palace nearby. Some protesters sang the French national anthem, while others carried banners with slogans calling for President Emmanuel Macron's resignation.

According to the BFMTV broadcaster, the situation in Paris remains tense with protesters having set the barricades ablaze.

A total of eight people have been injured during the protests.

The French Interior Ministry said that some 81,000 people were taking part in the protests across the country on Saturday with 8,000 of them participating in the demonstrations in Paris.

Large-scale demonstrations over the rise in fuel prices started in France on November 17. According to the French Interior Ministry, more than 287,000 people attended protests last Saturday.

The price of diesel in France has risen by around 23 percent this year, while the gasoline price has gone up by 15 percent. Prices are set to increase further in January.
