JERUSALEM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd January, 2020) The Holocaust is a tragedy shared by Russia and Israel as 40 percent of the Jews killed and tortured in Nazi persecution were from the Soviet Union, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

Putin has arrived in Israel for the forum on the memory of the Holocaust and has met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.

"As for the Holocaust tragedy, 40 percent of the killed and tortured Jews were the Jews from the Soviet Union," Putin said at a meeting with Rivlin.

The Russian president added that the tragedy had been experienced in both Russia and Israel and thanked Rivlin for an opportunity to visit Jerusalem.

"You have just said that one does not know where anti-Semitism ends. Unfortunately, we know this it ends in Auschwitz. So one has to be very careful to make sure that nothing like this happens in the future and to stand against any instances of xenophobia, anti-Semitism, wherever it happens and whoever it comes from," Putin said.
