France Football Magazine Announces New Award for Goalie Named After Soviet Player Yashin

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2019) The prominent France Football magazine, which covers global football news, announced on Thursday a new trophy named after Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin, which will be given to the best goalie of the year.

"For the first time in history, we will reward the best goalkeeper of the season with our brand new trophy: Yachine Trophy," the magazine said on Twitter.

According to the publication, the list of 10 nominees will be released on October 21, while the winner will be announced in December during the Ballon d'Or ceremony in the French capital of Paris.

A total of 180 sports journalists will participate in the vote for the best goalkeeper.

With Yashin. the Soviet team won the 1956 Olympic Games and 1960 UEFA Cup. He was the only player in his role to win the Ballon d'Or, which he received in 1963, and is recognized by FIFA as the 20th century's best goalkeeper.

The Ballon d'Or was first presented in 1956 as a prize to the best European football player of the year based on the opinion of a group of sports journalists. In 2010, the award was merged with FIFA World Player of the Year until 2016 when the magazine resumed its full ownership of the trophy.
