Lavrov Affirms Russian Sovereign Rights Amid Japan's Worries Over Kurils Military Activity
TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th May, 2019) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday responded to concerns, expressed by Japan, over Russia's military activities on the Kuril Islands by saying that Russian troops were operating in their sovereign territory.
"As [Japanese Foreign] Minister [Taro Kono] has said, he has expressed concern over Russia's military activities on the Southern Kuril Islands. In response, we have reaffirmed our position that the Russian armed forces are operating in their sovereign territory, as is customary under international law," Lavrov said following the 2+2 format talks in Tokyo.
