New Zealand's Police Press Terrorism Charges Against Christchurch Shooter

New Zealand's police have indicted Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of deadly shootings at two mosques in the country, on terrorism charges in addition to murder and attempted murder charges brought against him earlier, according to a statement released on the police's website on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) New Zealand's police have indicted Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of deadly shootings at two mosques in the country, on terrorism charges in addition to murder and attempted murder charges brought against him earlier, according to a statement released on the police's website on Tuesday.

"Police have met with victim's families and survivors of the March 15 Christchurch attack to inform them of new charges which have been filed, and update them on the ongoing Police investigation plus the court process to come.

A charge of engaging in a Terrorist Act under section 6A of the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002 has now been filed against Brenton Tarrant," the statement said.

According to the police, Tarrant now faces 51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act.

New Zealand was rocked by two mass shootings on March 15 at Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Center in Christchurch. The tragedy left 50 people dead and another 50 injured. Tarrant was detained immediately afterward and has since remained in custody.
