KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th April, 2019) Ukraine imported more than 15 million tonnes of coal from Russia in 2018 worth over $1.8 billion, the data released by the Ukrainian State Statistics Service on Thursday showed.

The total volume of Ukraine's coal import amounted to over 21 million tonnes last year, with the share of Russian coal totaling 70.2 percent, the data said.

Import of anthracite, also known as hard coal, from Russia amounted to more than 3 million tonnes and was worth almost $388,000.

The import of black coal, including coking coal, amounted to 11 million tonnes (nearly $1.5 billion).

Following the beginning of the deadly conflict in Donbas in eastern Ukraine, Kiev lost access to the majority of its mines. The most profitable mines with anthracite remain on the territory that is not controlled by the Ukrainian central government, while enterprises that remain under Kiev's control produce only light coal. Thus, Kiev has to rely on imports in its coal consumption.
