Sudanese Defense Minister Sworn in as Head of Transitional Military Council - Reports

DOHA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th April, 2019) Sudanese Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf on Thursday was sworn in as the head of the transitional military council, which would govern the country in the wake of a military coup, while Chief of Staff Kamal Abdul Maaruf was sworn in as the deputy head of the council, Sudan's state-run television reported.

The Sudanese military toppled President Omar Bashir, who was governing the African country since 1989, on Thursday after months of anti-government protests. The president was detained by the military personnel.

The defense minister, in his turn, introduced a state of emergency for three months and said that the military council would govern Sudan for two years after which the nation would hold elections.
