Shanahan Says Meeting Today With Pompeo, Nielsen to Discuss Possible Border Closure

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd April, 2019) US Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan told reporters he would meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Monday to discuss the logistics of a potential closure of the southern border.

"I'll be having conversations with Secretary of State today and most likely Secretary Nielsen," Shanahan said when asked whether the Pentagon had been asked to support the closure of the US-Mexico border.

Shanahan said he called for the meeting to find out the specifics and how Pentagon would continue its support role in the event of a closure.

Last week, US President Donald Trump threatened to close the southern border if Mexico did not take action to stop all illegal migration heading to the United States.

Moreover, on Saturday, Trump ordered the State Department to cut all direct financial assistance to the so-called Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
