New Zealand Police Say Transferred Christchurch Mosques to Local Community After Shootings

New Zealand Police said on Saturday two mosques in the city of Christchurch, which were attacked by a gunman on March 15, had been handed over to the local community

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd March, 2019) New Zealand Police said on Saturday two mosques in the city of Christchurch, which were attacked by a gunman on March 15, had been handed over to the local community.

"Police have today handed the Masjid Al Noor and Linwood Masjid back to the local community.

An armed police presence will remain at both mosques, and at mosques around New Zealand," the police said in a statement published on its website.

The police explained that since the attack, the mosques had been cordoned off. However, the cordons were subsequently reduced and the roads in the areas where the mosques are located were reopened for vehicular traffic.

Last week's attacks in the two mosques in Christchurch killed 50 people and left as many injured. The suspected attacker has been charged with murder and faces further charges.
