Sudanese Parliament Voted to Reduce Term of State of Emergency to 6 Months - Reports

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) The Sudanese parliament on Monday voted to reduce the term of the state of emergency imposed in the country from 12 to six months, the Sudan Tribune newspaper reported.

In late February, Sudanese President Omar Bashir dissolved the central government, dismissed the heads of all the provinces and declared a state of emergency in the country amid anti-government protests.

According to the newspaper, the lawmakers gathered for an emergency session on Monday to vote on measures announced by Bashir in late April in connection with the ongoing protests in the country.

Opposition parties to the government opposed the decisions of the head of state. In the end, after heated discussions, most lawmakers agreed to approve the state of emergency, but reducing it to six months.

Sudan has been gripped by anti-government protests, caused by rising prices and shortages of essential goods, since December. At least 30 people have been killed and 200 others have been injured in the unrest, according to various sources.
