Construction vessel Pioneering Spirit will suspend pipeline construction in the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone, carried out as part of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, for about a month to conduct planned platform lift work in the North Sea, the pipeline's operator said on Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st March, 2019) Construction vessel Pioneering Spirit will suspend pipeline construction in the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone, carried out as part of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, for about a month to conduct planned platform lift work in the North Sea, the pipeline's operator said on Friday.

Pioneering Spirit will temporarily suspend pipeline installation in the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone "to carry out a long term planned platform lift work in the North Sea," the Nord Stream 2 AG said in a statement.

The vessel's work in the North Sea was agreed as part of a contract signed with Swiss-based offshore contractor Allseas in April 2017, according to the statement.

"Pioneering Spirit will return to the Baltic Sea to continue laying the Nord Stream 2 pipeline within approximately one month. Another short demobilisation period for Pioneering Spirit is foreseen for later in 2019," the operator added.

Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture of Russian gas giant Gazprom and five European companies. The project envisages the construction of two gas pipelines that will run from Russia, through the Baltic Sea and to a hub in Germany. It aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters (1.9 trillion cubic feet) of Russian natural gas to the EU states every year.
