Tele2 Russia, Huawei to Consider Possibility of Launching 5G Network in Russia in 2019

Telecommunications company Tele2 Russia and Chinese IT giant Huawei will consider the possibility of launching a 5G network in Russia this year, with the relevant agreement having been signed on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) Telecommunications company Tele2 Russia and Chinese IT giant Huawei will consider the possibility of launching a 5G network in Russia this year, with the relevant agreement having been signed on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Tuesday.

The document outlining the development of the strategic cooperation between the firms was signed by CEO of the T2 RTK Holding Sergei Edmin and head of the Russian branch of Huawei Zhao Lei.

The 5G technology is going to be tested on the Tele2 network, which would allow the company to prepare the new formtat for commercial launch in Russia. The tests will be done with the help of expertise from Huawei, which is already testing 5G technologies in a number of countries.

"Tele2 has already been testing the scenario of using 5G in various branches of industry. At this stage it is necessary to ensure partnership with the Huawei company, which is a flagship of the technology's development and has already presented at the congress in Barcelona its 5G smartphone. We are sure that the joint work on the use of the standard will allow its commercial launch in Russia to accelerate," Edmin said.

The Mobile World Congress is the biggest annual exhibition of the mobile industry. It gathers key telecommunications companies, manufacturers of mobile phones and developers of content for mobile devices.
