Russian Envoy to UN Says Withdrawal of US Troops From Syria Right Move

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik on Saturday that the US decision to withdraw troops from Syria was a "step in the right direction."

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th December, 2018) Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik on Saturday that the US decision to withdraw troops from Syria was a "step in the right direction."

On December 19, US President Donald Trump announced victory over the Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia) in Syria, adding that the fight against the terrorist group was the only reason the United States remained in the Arab country. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders later said that the United States had started to withdraw its troops from the country, but that the victory over the Islamic State did not mean the end of the US-led coalition in Syria.

"The withdrawal of foreign forces that were deployed in Syria without permission from the legal authorities is a step in the right direction," Nebenzia said.

The US-led coalition launched its campaign in Syria in September 2014 claiming that the goal was to defeat the IS. The coalition's activities are not authorized by either the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
