UN General Assembly Adopts Russia-Drafted Resolution on Combating Cybercrime

The UN General Assembly adopted Monday a Russia-drafted resolution on countering the use of information and communication technologies for criminal purposes, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations said.

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) The UN General Assembly adopted Monday a Russia-drafted resolution on countering the use of information and communication technologies for criminal purposes, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations said.

"The resolution gives rise to the search and formulating an answer to one of the most pressing global threats - the issue of cybercrime," the mission said on its official website.

At the first stage, the resolution envisages launching a wide political and legal discussion of the issue with the participation of the UN secretary-general, the mission said.

According to the mission, 36 UN member states, "including our BRICS partners" were co-authors of the document.

"The Russian initiative has garnered wide interregional support, including among the CSTO [Collective Security Treaty Organization] and SCO [Shanghai Cooperation Organization] countries, many states in Africa, Latin America and Asia. It is noteworthy that the United States and EU countries voted against it, which means, that they, for some reason, are not interested in common decisions in this area," the mission said.

The mission, however, expressed hope that, following the adoption of the resolution, the dialogue on the issue at the United Nations would be most constructive and would bring together as many nations as possible.
