Mexico City's 1st Elected Female Mayor Vows to Dissolve Riot Police

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th December, 2018) Claudia Sheinbaum, the first elected female mayor of Mexico City, on Wednesday pledged to abandon the riot police, which are a part of the law enforcement structure of the Mexican capital.

"I have asked the national defense minister to completely dissolve the riot police in order to implement the requirements of the 1968 student movement and in line with the powers given to me as the head of the city by the political constitution of Mexico City," Sheinbaum said during the swearing-in ceremony.

The new mayor emphasized that police should protect people instead of cracking down on them.

Sheinbaum was elected the mayor of the 9-million-strong city at the July 1 vote. The official is a close ally of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was sworn in on Saturday.

Sheinbaum is the first elected female mayor to govern the Mexican capital. In 1999-2000, Rosario Robles served as an interim mayor of Mexico City after being appointed to this position.
