Police Say 2 Men Barricaded in Apartment in Northeastern Australia, Fired at Officers

According to the police, they responded to the incident in the city of Brisbane at around 11 a.m. local time (01:00 GMT). The area of the ongoing operation in the city's inner suburb of Auchenflower has been cordoned off.

"Officers were called to an address on Coronation Drive as part of an ongoing investigation and noticed two armed men ... A shot was fired at responding officers - No one was injured - Two armed men remain inside unit - Police cordons still in place, Coronation Dr [Drive] closed," the police said via its official Twitter feed.

According to The Australian newspaper, the police initially arrived at the building to investigate reported property-related offenses, but were fired at while trying to get inside.

"When our SERT [Special Emergency Response Team] officers were gaining entry to the unit a shot was fired and he two male offenders barricaded themselves inside a unit," a police spokesman was quoted as saying by the outlet.

According to the spokesman, the police are currently negotiating with the gunmen.

The news outlet also said that some of the residents had been relocated from the area of the operation but the building itself had not been evacuated.
