The closed-door meeting is taking place in the Palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the Italian prime minister.
The Russian foreign minister arrived in the Italian capital earlier on Thursday. On Friday, Lavrov is expected to hold negotiations with Italian counterpart Enzo Moavero Milanesi and take part in the annual Mediterranean Dialogues conference. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov is due to hold a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event.
