Trump's Possible Decision to Seal Border for Migrants 'Disgraceful' - Advocacy Group

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) Reports that US President Donald Trump is considering closing his country's southern border to keep out Central American asylum-seekers would be a disgrace if true, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) advocacy group said in a press release on Friday.

"It's disgraceful the Trump administration would even consider what's being reported," the release said. "It would mean refusing to protect people who can prove they are fleeing persecution."

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that the White House could issue an executive order suspending the right to seek asylum in the United States for Central American migrants fleeing prosecution at home.

The possible move comes as a caravan of thousands of Central American migrants makes its way through Mexico toward the US border.

The ACLU warned that such a move would represent a huge moral failure for the White House and would lead to legal scrutiny.

The Washington Post report also said the White House would send up to 1,000 additional US troops to boost security at the border ahead of the arrival of the caravan, which mostly comprises Honduran nationals.
