Lebanese President Pledges to Stabilize Situation in Refugee Camp in South of Country

BEIRUT (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) Lebanese President Michel Aoun said on Thursday that the country's Armed Forces would ensure security and stability in the southern Lebanese village of Mieh w Mieh, where tensions have flared up earlier in the day.

Clashes between the Jund Ansar Allah Islamist group and the Fatah movement broke out at a Palestinian refugee camp located in Mieh w Mieh in mid-October. On Wednesday night, the Lebanese Armed Forces sent extra troops to the camp in order to establish order there, as violent clashes started again. The Armed Forces called on the warring parties to suspend shootings threatening the security both of the refugees and of the Mieh w Mieh residents.

"The army will continue to take the necessary measures to maintain security and stability in Mieh w Mieh region, especially in wake of a number of security incidents that have shaken Mieh w Mieh refugee camp and its surroundings," Aoun told the delegation from Mieh w Mieh, as quoted by the Lebanese National news Agency.

Two Lebanese military were injured in clashes on Thursday, the press service of the Lebanese Armed Forces said in a statement.

"Today, in the course of armed clashes inside the Mieh w Mieh [refugee] camp, a rocket missile exploded near one of the army's bases ... which resulted in two servicemen suffering injuries," the statement read.

Around 450,000 registered refugees are currently living in Lebanon, according to the estimates of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
