The train traffic has been partially restored at Cologne's main railway station after the hostage-taking incident that rocked the German city earlier on Monday, the local police said.

Earlier in the day, a man took a woman hostage in a drugstore at the station. The police managed to neutralize the offender, after which he and the hostage were taken to hospital.

Following the incident, the railway station and the nearby streets were cordoned off.

"The traffic is being gradually restored," the police wrote on Twitter.

Earlier in the day, Deutsche Bahn AG said that the traffic on tracks from 1 to 9 had been restored, with trains still departing with big delays.

The police earlier said that it did not rule out that terrorist motives could have been behind the hostage-taking.
