Pompeo Reaffirms Support for Strong, Sovereign Iraq in Call With Salih - State Dept.
WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th October, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated Iraq's newly elected President Barham Salih in a phone call on Wednesday and reaffirmed that the United States continues to support a strong and sovereign Iraq, the State Department said in a press release.
"Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke with Barham Salih, Iraq's new President," the release said.
� "The Secretary underscored continuing US support for a strong, sovereign, and prosperous Iraq as outlined in our bilateral Strategic Framework Agreement with Iraq."
The Iraqi parliament elected Salih, who served as the prime minister of Iraqi Kurdistan from 2009 to 2012, during a second round of voting on Tuesday.
Salih officially assumed office earlier on Wednesday in a formal handover ceremony at the presidential palace in Baghdad.
