UK to Retain Membership of European Space Agency After Brexit - ESA Official

The United Kingdom will continue to be a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) after Brexit, a legal officer at the ESA, Alexander Soucek, told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th September, 2018) The United Kingdom will continue to be a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) after Brexit, a legal officer at the ESA, Alexander Soucek, told Sputnik.

"The United Kingdom will remain a member state of ESA, once Brexit has been executed, will be a reality," Soucek said.

London has reportedly been studying plans to launch its own satellite navigation system as Brussels decided to push the United Kingdom out of security-sensitive parts of the Galileo satellite navigation system after Brexit. Galileo is a joint project of the European Commission and ESA.

Europe's Global Satellite Navigation System (GNSS), which was agreed upon in 2003 and went live in 2016, was created as an alternative to US' GPS and Russia's GLONASS. The project is expected to be in full operation by 2020, while the United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the bloc on March 29, 2019.
