Pompeo, Modi Discuss US-India Partnership, Indo-Pacific Stability

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) The US-India strategic partnership and stability in Indo-Pacific region were among the main topics of discussions between US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting in New Delhi, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said on Thursday.

"Pompeo conveyed the importance attached by [US] President [Donald] Trump to the deepening strategic partnership between the United States and India, and US support for India's role as a leading global power and regional security provider," Nauert said in a readout of the meeting.

Both sides discussed joint efforts to promote stability and prosperity in Indo-Pacific region, she added.

Pompeo underscored the importance of people-to-people contacts in the bilateral relationship. He and Modi also discussed the US-India economic partnership and issues related to bilateral trade, Nauert said.

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis also attended the meeting, Nauert said.

Earlier on Thursday, Pompeo and Mattis wrapped up the first 2+2 Dialogue with their Indian counterparts Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi.

During their meetings, ministers from the two countries signed a deal to �boost defense communications and pave the way toward more Us military sales to India.
