US Urges Zimbabwe Opposition to Accept Vote Outcome

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The US State Department called on Zimbabwes defiant opposition on Friday to respect the rule of law after its top court upheld the July victory of sitting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

"Today, Zimbabwes Constitutional Court declared Emmerson D. Mnangagwa the winner of the election� and dismissed MDC Alliances challenge of the July 30 presidential election results.

The United States urges all parties to respect the Zimbabwean constitution and the rule of law," it said.

The opposition MDC Alliance dismissed the results of the vote as a sham, arguing the ballot had been marred by fraud, and threatened a "vigorous program of action" in response to the "electoral theft."

The State Department warned that violence should not be part of the political process and called on the government to hold substantive discussions with all stakeholders and implement electoral and broader political and economic reforms.
